Skin exfoliation for newbies

Skin exfoliation is the process where the oldest dead skin cells on the skins’ surface are removed. Exfoliation can be achieved through physical (manual) or chemical methods. It helps to remove scars and allows the ingredients in your skincare products to penetrate into your skin and produce results.

Physical exfoliation is the most popular type of exfoliation. It is the process where you remove the dead skin cells from the skins’ surface manually. Physical exfoliants include, loofahs, brushes, konjac sponges, wash cloths, body polish, body scrubs etc.

Chemical exfoliation involves the use of chemicals to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. They interact with the skin and dissolve dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliants include serums, peels and creams containing salicylic acid, Alpha-hydroxy acid, beta-hydroxy acid, kojic acid, vitamin c etc. You probably do this without knowing. Check the ingredient list on your beauty products and I am sure you will find some of these acids listed.

You can do most physical exfoliation and some chemical exfoliation at home. However, before using chemical exfoliants always consult a trained professional in order to determine what works best for your skin type. Whichever mode of exfoliation you choose make sure you do not over do it (it is very easy to get carried away). Remember to ALWAYS use sunscreen to avoid skin damage.
