Altruist Sunscreen: review

Altruist sunscreen

Altruist is a brand known for their sunscreen and a mission “to reduce the incidence of skin cancer through the increased use of quality sunscreen together with better education and awareness”. You must have come across this brand on somebody’s “must-have” list of either inclusive, coloured-skin-friendly or affordable sunscreens. Another plus is that your purchase supports children with Albinism in Africa!

So many good things about this brand but you came here for my review so let’s get to it. This sunscreen comes in spf 30 and 50. I bought the spf 50.

Packaging and claims

It comes in a grey tube with a white cover. Altruist is written in caps in a bold white font, sunscreen is written in red and spf 50 in white. “Spf 50 concieved in the UK by consultant dermatologist Dr. Andrew Birne”. It is made in Germany and has a period after opening of 12 months. The product is designed for sensitive skin. It is fragrance free with a low risk of allergy. Suitable for daily use on face, body and children.

Thoughts: I love the sleek-minimalist packaging, the tube makes it easier to get the product using the “two-finger method” (keep reading to know what that is). Also, while my skin is not sensitive, I think it’ll benefit from something mild and moisturizing.

Ingredients

Aqua, C12 – 15, Alkyl Benzoate, Ethylhexyl Stearate, Octocrylene, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Glycerin, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Titanium Dioxide(nano), Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, Glyceryl Stearate, Tris-Biphenyl Triazine (nano), Ethylhexyl Triazine, Bis- Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Aminomethyl Propanol, Acrylates/C10 – 30 Alkyl Titanium Dioxide, Decyl Glucoside, Disodium Phosphate, Simethicone, Diethyhexyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate, Xanthan gum, Butylene Glycol, Caprylyl Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Silver chloride.

Thoughts: The main ingredient that stands out apart from the numerous sunscreens in this product is Glycerin. It is a natural moisturizer that is also in our skin. Because of this, it protects the skin and also restores the skin barrier. This should be a draw for people with dry skin.

Directions for use

This is written as “Dermatologist’s advice”. It says “ cover up with clothes and a hat. Avoid midday sun. Apply generously before going out. Reapply frequently. Prolonged exposure to the sun may be harmful. Babies should not be exposed to the sun. Water-resistant.

Thoughts: This is all great advice.

Consistency/application

It has a thick cream-like consistency and spreads really well over the skin. It goes on white however as you rub it in, it disappears and doesn’t leave a white-cast.

Pro-tip: I read somewhere that the “two-finger method” is the best way to gauge how much sunscreen you need for your face and neck. It is basically fetching sunscreen on your index and middle finger in a straight line, as shown in the picture above. Then, using all of it on your face and neck.

Price

It ranges from 5,000 – 7,000 naira. I got mine for 5,500 naira from @faceandthreads_ on Instagram and delivery was 300 naira (within Kaduna, depending on location). So I spent 5,800 naira in total. A win because I hate paying delivery fees.

Thoughts: this price range is to serve as a guide. Personally, I think anyone selling higher than 7,000 naira should not be patronized.

Overall thoughts

Altruist sunscreen is a breath of fresh air compared to the other sunscreen options that I have tried. It does not leave a white-cast, applies smoothly and I have not experienced any breakouts. It can be a bit oily if you are heavy-handed though or if you have oily skin. However, it is nothing a little blotting powder cannot fix. It is also really affordable. I love how my face feels moisturised when I use this product.

I noticed a slight itchy sensation on my face on the rare occasion that I sweat with this product on, I don’t know what that is about. It is not uncomfortable but it is there. I am yet to see anyone that has experienced this but it happens to me every time.

This sunscreen hurts if it gets into your eyes so by all means avoid that and if it happens rinse with cold water immediately. I haven’t used a sunscreen as good as this one at this price point and I am very happy with this purchase..There is also a spray option that would be great for reapplication. I haven’t tried it yet though.

Will I recommend this product? Yes! Get it now!
Will I repurchase? Yes!
